Urgent Safety bulletin Sublimated Race Suits
Do Not Meet SFI Specifications
NASR Bulettin # 05 /2009
It's been brought to the
attention of NASR that certain driver's protective suits being manufactured and
distributed into the market place present a unique and serious threat to the
safety of the drivers. These suits known as sublimated suits, incorporate an
outer layer of material that's neither flame nor heat resistant and will melt
at relatively low temperatures.
Theses suits can be easy
identified, said a representative of SFI, by the nature of their graphics,
which are achieved by a process called dye sublimation. Rather than using
traditional graphic methods such as patches attached to, or embroidery sewn
into the suit, this process provides for complex and vivid graphics, which
actually imbedded indirectly into the outer layer of the material
At first these suits were
distributed for use in motor sports disciplines in which the sanctioning body
have No minimum standards for driver protective clothing. They are not
identified or certified by the manufacturer as meeting the SFI Spec 3.2A, or any other industry wide standard
There have already been
sublimated suits found on the Australian Speedway scene produced by AWESOME RACEWEAR without SFI approval
badges. These suits do not, and cannot meet any accepted wide standard for
driver protection and do not meet the minimum safety standards set by NASR
If any one presents such a
suit to scrutineering, the technical inspectors or scrutineers may refuse to
allow the driver to compete in that race meeting.
All race suits must meet the
minimum SFI or FIA safety specifications for their particular racing division
and the suit must have the appropriate labels and markings identifying these
approvals. NASR encourages the supplier to

Fire Extinguisher rule Update
#2
All speedway teams are
required to carry as a minimum in the pit area / transporters effective
immediately.
A 2.0 kg Dry chemical Powder
Extinguisher or greater may be used strictly with the following compliance
points :
The Extinguisher is compliant
to AS1841.5 and that it carries the Australian standards tick certification. AS
1841.5 pertains to ( powder extinguishers ) design, and commissioning standard.
The standard AS/NZS 1841.1
pertains to ( general requirements ) for design, and commissioning standard.
Simply, Most extinguishers
imported in
The extinguisher must carry a
yellow date tag. This tag is the last part of the requirement and it ensures
that the extinguisher is serviced and maintained in accordance to AS1851
section 15. The tag should carry the standard AS 1851 printed on it. As 1851
section 15 means in simple terms the portable fire extinguisher is serviced
routinely at 6 month intervals, by a deemed competent person. Such checks
include : accessibility, anti tamper device, operating labels, damage,
corrosion, hose condition, pressure indicator, head or cap assembly, signage,
bracket, discharge nozzle.
If serviced correctly, all of
these items should be a pass only. You may find the tags hard to find, a proper
fire protection company will have them. Retailers like hardware stores wont
have them.
Other types of fire
extinguishers that will comply to this ruling are;
9 litre AFFF Foam
extinguishers, AR or ATC type concentrate are the best types, but AFFF will
pass. These extinguishers must comply with the points above.
9 litre Cold fire extinguishers.
These extinguishers must comply with compliance points above.
All of the above information
was lifted from AS 1851 - 2005 (maintenance of fire protection systems and
equipment) Australian standard professional pack.
